What is Triple Negative Breast Cancer?

Just in recent years, Triple Negative Breast Cancer has sparked interest in the news where instead of calling the tumor as ER-negative, PR-negative, and HER2-negative; researchers began using the shorthand term, "Triple Negative," dubbed the "new type" type of cancer. Being Triple Negative, you don't have a targeted therapy and that your only treatment option is chemotherapy.

Triple Negative is seen in about 15% of all breast cancers. Triple Negative is a very aggressive cancer that tends to strike younger women, pre-menopause, especially among African-American women and women who have BRCA1 mutations. The tumor tends to be fast growing and is less likely to show up on an annual mammogram. TN is more likely to metastasis early on; has a high rate of recurrence in the first 2-3 years from diagnosis and has a poorer prognosis than other types of breast cancer due to lack of specific, targeted treatment for TNBC.

RSK2 Inhibition Has The Potential To Prevent Triple Negative Breast Cancer Recurrence

"...identified a protein critical to the survival of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients. This breakthrough research has the potential to cure TNBC by targeting a protein called RSK2, which eliminates TNBC cells completely. The study, published June 5, 2012 in Stem Cells medical journal, reports that RSK2 inhibitors have the ability to kill all of the cells including cancer stem cells which give rise to cancer recurrence. This cutting-edge discovery will potentially personalize the treatment of TNBC on an international scale.

"RSK2 inhibition provides a novel therapeutic avenue for TNBC and holds the promise of being one of the first targeted therapies for this challenging form of breast cancer," says Dr. Sandra Dunn, UBC."

  1. What stage is this trial in? And where?

    1. This research project is led by Dr. Sandra Dunn at University of British Columbia, Canada.
This is a message from a fellow TNBC sister, Donna Stauffer: Mikel from the TNBCF website contacted the researchers and here's the reply he received:
I sent an email to one of the researchers, Dr. Sandra Dunn, and here you have the answer:

"We are also very excited about the new developments in TNBC. At this point, we are in the process of identifying inhibitors to RSK2 and as such I have started a company to focus on that exclusively. As far as I know, there are no clinical trials out there using RSK2 inhibitors because this is so new! I can say that we are also working very hard to find off-patent drugs (drugs that have been approved for other diseases) which will inhibit RSK2 so that we can get something out to patients as soon as possible. Our plan is to submit the data for publication in July." Thanks for viewing my blog. Melissa

  2. Felt hope after reading this article, i like to thank DR. Sandra Dunn and other researchers for revealing this to our world. My mom diagnosed with Tnbc, undergone mastectomy last week. Melissa i kindly request you to provide my some use full information for continuation in therapy and latest updated on RSK2 inhibitors in Tnbc. My id is sdurgesh@rediffmail.com. i am S.Durgesh from chennai - India.
